Larry D. Allen is presently Principal of Boone Grove Middle School in Boone Grove, Indiana. He has taught and conducted music programs and courses at the college and university level at the following institutions: Trinity College (Hartford, Connecticut), The Hartt School, Central Connecticut State University, Valparaiso University, VanderCook College of Music, Duquesne University, and Villanova University.
In 1981, Mr. Allen initiated SUMMER MUSIC INSTITUTES, a graduate level summer music program for music educators featuring the national and international talents in the field in K-12 music education as instructors. Over twenty years, this summer educational extravaganza expanded to five site locations under Mr. Allen's direction which attracts approximately 4,000 music educators each summer representing over one million public school students.
Since 1969, Mr. Allen has worked annually in
public schools as a music educator and as a school administrator in Connecticut,
Massachusetts, and Indiana. He has received recognition for his unique public
school music programs including: The Artist-in-Residence Program,
The Side-by-Side Symphony Series, Sound: The Physics
of Music, and The Exploratory Music Program.
As a graduate of Northmont High School in Clayton, Ohio, Mr. Allen received his
Bachelor of Music Education Degree from Baldwin-Wallace College, his Masters of Music
Degree in oboe performance with Robert Bloom and Bert Lucarelli at the Hartt School, and his
Sixth Year Degree in Educational Administration from the University of Connecticut.
He has performed as an oboist and English hornist with symphony orchestras in Hartforrd, Connecticut, New Britain, Connecticut, Bridgeport, Connecticut, Worcester, Massachusetts, and LaPorte, Indiana.
He and his wife, Judie have adopted six children representing the State of Connecticut, and the countries of Korea and Colombia. Both have been leaders in the Open Door Society for Adoptive Families and Heal the Children providing international foster care.
